Bajana, India
Gujarat lies on the migratory route of thousands of bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. The annual southwest brings desperately needed rains that replenish water bodies and regenerate grasslands, creating perfect habitats for avifauna such as Flamingo, Stork, Ibis, Goose, Duck, Sarus Crane, Bustard, Florican and Pelican. A sizeable population of the World’s Demoiselle and Common cranes spend their winter in Gujarat and about 1/2 the World’s Lesser florican, an endangered species, breeds in the grasslands of Kachchh, Saurashtra and Dahod districts during the monsoon. The vulnerable Imperial and Greater-spotted eagles also migrate to the state during Winter.
Gujarat more than 2,700 species of animals and 4,300 species of plants. To protect this biodiversity, the state has set up 04 national parks and 22 wildlife sanctuaries. The Gir National park in Junagadh is the only remaining habitat of the Asiatic Lion. The wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kachchh is home to the native Ghudkhar, a member of the horse family. Species indigenous to India and found in Gujarat include the Nilgai, Chowsingha, Sloth bear and Blackbuck.
